Travel Information

There is a couple of points that may require more immediate action.

First, make sure that you have checked the visa requirements for both Greece and Turkey. Should you need a letter that explains the purpose of your trip, please let us know.

Second, we urge you to make reservations for your trip to Chios and back as soon as possible. Chios is connected to Athens by several flights per day by two airlines (Olympic Airways, and Aegean). During the summer months, there are charter flights that directly connect Chios to a few major European cities. If a flight all the way to Chios is difficult to book, and/or costly, please consider flying to Athens and then catch a boat to Chios from the port of Piraeus (Athens and Piraeus form one city complex, and there is regular bus and metro service between the Athens airport and the Piraeus port to be safe, leave a minimum of 2 hours between your arrival to the airport and the boat departure time).

Rooms are available to Summer School participants from the night of August the 26th to the night of September the 1st. On August the 26th, there is a daily boat from Piraeus to Chios that leaves at 12:30 in the middle of the day and arrives in Chios at 18:30 in the evening) and a boat that leaves at 19:00 and arrives in Chios at 3:30 in the morning). Either arrival time is fine, because the hotel (Chandris) is right at the Chios port, and it is safe and easy to arrive at either time (there will be a person waiting for you). Both boats trips will offer a beautiful view of the Aegean. The morning boat will get you there quicker and in time to have a full night's rest before the beginning of the conference; the evening boat is conventional and slower, but has open decks that allow you to enjoy the view better. Once you decide to use a boat for this part of your trip, please let us know so that we can help with boat reservations.

For the return, you can count on a slow boat leaving Chios for Piraeus at 21:00 in the evening of September the 1st (arriving to Piraeus at 6:30 the morning of September the 2nd), on a fast boat leaving Chios a few hours later (at midnight, also arriving to Piraeus at 6:30), and boats leaving at the same times on September the 2nd and arriving to Piraeus in the morning of September the 3rd. Since there will be a hotel room reserved for the night of September the 1st, you may want to consider leaving on the evening of September the 2nd and catch a flight out from Athens on September the 3rd.Please note that boats may be arriving to Piraeus a little late, due to heavy summer traffic. We highly advise choosing a flight out of Athens that is not scheduled to depart in early morning.

Some alternative routes to Chios may also be convenient to few participants. One would be to reach Chios from Turkey, through the airport of Izmir. Please let us know if this is an option for you so that we can help you with the rest of the trip.

Those traveling to Chios from the Balkans, may also want to consider reaching Thessaloniki, Kavala or even Athens by train, and then catch a boat from there (the boats connecting Chios to Thessaloniki or Kavala are, however, very few).

Please contact us for anything that you may need help with.
